God Said No

I asked God to take away my habit.
God said, No.
It is not for me to take away,
but for you to give it up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, No.
His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, No. Patience is a byproduct of tribulations;
it isn't granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness..
God said, No.
I give you blessings;
Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, No.
Suffering draws you apart from
worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, No.
You must grow on your own,
but I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No.
I will give you life,
so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.
God said... Ahhhh, Yes!
finally you have the idea.

Youth Ministry News - October 2009

enews
News for Young People in the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong
1

Greetings!  We are at the juncture of the year where some of us are relaxing on white sandy beaches enjoying holidays, whilst others are spending every waking moment studying for upcoming exams, and many of us are simply maintaining the status quo.  Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, I pray that you know that our God is right there with you!

If you do have some time to squeeze in something more there is plenty to choose from.  From conversations and conferences to celebrations and chit-chat, there is something for everyone.  Check out all the upcoming events listed below.

Also, can I encourage you to check out this year's Social Justice Statement from the Australian Catholic Bishops – it's about you!  "And You Will Be My Witnesses: Young People and Justice" reflects back on the challenge Pope Benedict left to us all at the conclusion of World Youth Day 08 – "What will you leave to the next generation?  What difference will you make?" The Statement and associated resources can be downloaded at www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au

If you would like any further information or if you think I can help out in any way please do not hesitate to contact me on 4253 0809 or email youth@dow.org.au.

Peace,
Loretta

A powerful prayer

Father, I ask you to bless my friends, relatives and those that I care deeply for, who are reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of your love and power. Holy Spirit, I ask You to minister to their spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them your peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubt, release a renewed confidence through your grace. Where there is need, I ask you to fulfill their needs. Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and their comings. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.

Well it's a whole other story in a whole other world.

A mess of complications. Let me tell you 'bout the girl.

A whole lot of trouble, a word to the wise,

Don't ever be mistaken she's the devil in disguise.

Oh mercy me, better let it be.

Alabama beauty there staring back at me.

Take a chance, baby wanna dance.

Moving like an alley cat.

I got Hepa Jika next to me.

Well her hair is like a raven, her eyes are black as night,

Ruby lips are threatening to lead me right.

Get me to the station, I gotta leave the state.

Get me on a Greyhound 'fore it is too late.

Fwd: Timekeepers for World Masters Games

Greetings Leatherjackets! - Please see the note below from Masters Swimming. - Sean

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Masters Swimming NSW

Hallo All,

Please let your club members know about this:

Due to the unprecedented number of entries in the 800m event in the World Masters Games we have had to extend the day considerably and the event will now run from 8.00 am until approx 10.00 pm. While we have plenty of wonderful volunteers for other days this means we are asking for special volunteers for the 800m events on Saturday 10th October.

If you are willing and able to timekeep from 7.30 am until 12.30 pm and again from 5.00 pm until 10.00 pm please let us know. Particularly if you are swimming or supporting swimmers in these events we need your help. Remember the Event can't start until we have enough timekeepers ready to press their buttons at 7.45 am sharp.

Please get in touch with Jamie Turner if you can help. Email: jam13t@hotmail.com  or landline 02 9745 1067.

2010 Liverpool Fees - Feedback

Greetings Leatherjackets!

We need to set the fees for the coming year and update Masters Swimming by the end of the month. As we have been without a coach for this year this has allowed us to retain an amount at the bank for future coaching services.

Consequently it is proposed to reduce the new member and renewal fees for 2010 as follows:
- New members joining between now and 31 Dec covering 1/9/09 to 31/12 /10 = $100
- Renewals and new members covering 1/1/10 to 31/12/10 = $85

This will cover the individual NSW and Australian Masters fees plus $20 for club Masters affiliation costs.

If you have any thoughts on this, could you "reply all" to this message so that Craig and Tino are also copied in.

Thanks!

See you in the pool (next week!!)

DOW Youth August 2009

YMeNews
News for Young People in the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong
1 Welcome to our August edition of the Youth eNewsletter. Time passes so quickly in the world of Youth and Young Adults and with each week many of you are continuing to gather in Youth Groups and communities around the Diocese. Recently I have been able to visit young people and parishioners at Dapto, Port Kembla, Macquarie Fields, Kiama and Camden and was also able to attend the Year 9 Reflection Day at St John's, Nowra. I would love to catch up with more of you so drop me a line to arrange a time to chat.

We have just celebrated the one year anniversary of WYD '08. It's hard to believe that it's a whole year since all the grace and blessings of WYD were here in our midst and even more difficult to believe that it's now time to turn our attention to WYD 2011, being held in Madrid. It's time for the next pilgrimage to begin!

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011 | Madrid

The countdown has begun to WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011 and as a Diocese we will celebrate '2 Years to Go' with celebrations on 21-22 August. Come along and be a part of both or either events and take the first step on our journey to Madrid.

LOGO UNVEILED FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011
wyd_madrid_mini
Reflects Unity That Forms a Marian Crown
The logo for World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid recently presented: The image reflects youth of the world beneath the cross, united to form the crown of Our Lady, patron of Madrid. The upcoming World Youth Day is scheduled for 16-21 Aug 2011. The logo designer, José Gil-Nogués, explained that the image symbolises "youth of the whole world united to celebrate their faith together with the Pope, at the foot of the cross, and they form the crown of Our Lady of Almudena, patron of Madrid."The crown, Gil-Nogués added, forms the "M" of Mary and of Madrid. And the cross, symbol of Christianity, presides over the event. The message of the logo, the designer continued, is "a catechesis, an opportunity for evangelisation: The quick and sure path to reach Christ is the Virgin Mary, Mother of God and of mankind. In Mary's faith, youth have the example and model for reaching Christ and fulfilling the primary goal of World Youth Day: to bring their message to the world. "The logo has a firm and spontaneous stroke," Gil-Nogués suggested, "like youth of the 21st century. It is close, friendly, open. Joyful, carefree and positive. The use of a palette of warm colours -- red, orange and yellow -- transmits unmistakable warmth and friendliness, symbols of the identity of a city like Madrid, a nation like Spain. These colours also reflect the 'divine warmth' of Trinitarian Love."

NEW YOUTH MINISTERS @ MOUNT CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL
At the recent Mount Carmel Day Mass three young people were commissioned to take up a new role as Youth Ministers at Mount Carmel High School. Dominic Fricot, Jessica Kaldasaun and Emma Rice are parishioners at Varroville and Eagle Vale parishes and will be working together to make significant connections for the students between school and parish. They are both daunted and excited by their new role and are busy planning for their first event later this month. Please keep these new Youth Ministers in your prayers as they take up this vital ministry.

NATIONAL VISION FOR YOUTH MINISTRY
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference have just launched 'Anointed and Sent: An Australian Vision for Catholic Youth Ministry'. This document has been many years in the making and it's exciting that for the first time in Australia all those involved in youth ministry can look to this vision and work in the one direction. If you would like to download a copy head to www.youthministry.catholic.org.au or if you would like a hard copy give me a call.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE EUCHARIST
Over forty young people from across the diocese have recently completed training as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Coming from nine of our Diocesan schools, these young people will now be commissioned to serve as Extraordinary Ministers in their parish communities.

VINNIES IN THE ILLAWARRA
The St Vincent de Paul Society is launching a new project for young people in the Illawarra to get involved in social action.  If you would like to get involved contact Jeannine Ashton on 4627 9013 or jeannine@svdpwgong.org.au.

CENTENARY OF THE DEATH OF BLESSED MARY MACKILLOP
Australia's first saint, Blessed Mary MacKillop is a role model for all Aussies.  This year on August 8 we will celebrate the Centenary of her death.  Many of us have been taught by the Josephite Sisters or met them through other church ministries.  Take this opportunity to catch up with the Josephites you know and say 'thanks' for the witness they have been to you as they live in the footsteps of Mary MacKillop.

DIOCESAN MULTICULTURAL MASS
On Sunday August 30 we will gather as a Diocese at Mt Carmel Parish for the annual Multicultural Mass.  All are invited to join the Bishop for this awesome celebration of the cultural gifts that make up the unique church of Wollongong.  Just remember that Aussies are cultural beings too; if you're Aussie born and bred come along and be a part of this cultural melting pot.

If you have anything you would like to promote, advertise or brag about in the next e-newsletter please email me at youth@dow.org.au or call me on 4253 0809.

Peace, Loretta

Greetings from China

Greetings from China!

We are now into the second week of our travels. Having already been to Tibet, we now find ourselves in Sichuan province.

Unfortunately I am still unable to access facebook or look at pictures on Picasa. However, I think the photo's are still copying up to the web. I lost some photo's when the memory card decided to go haywire (just after I'd finished giving them titles and all, aargh!) but I'm sure there are already way too many.

When you get time, you can have a look (hopefully) at:

http://picasaweb.google.com/SMP.Donovan/Tibet-Qinghai
http://picasaweb.google.com/SMP.Donovan/Sichuan

Tibet was very interesting, and I can report that the food perfectly suits an Aussie palate.

In Sichuan the Pandas are every bit as cute as they seem in the pictures. Mind you, watch out for the claws as they can climb trees and might do a bit of damage.

Visiting Emei Shan tomorrow.

Peace
Sean

Finish at Tsinghua today last (perhaps) photo's

Hi -

Well it is my last day here at Tsinghua University. It has certainly been an experience.

We had our test this morning and this afternoon we will be doing a few presentations to finalise the course.

I have posted (I think) some new photos to picasa at http://picasaweb.google.com/SMP.Donovan/China2009TsinghuaUnversityAndBeijing#  Unfortunately I can't test to see if they have worked because picasa seems to be blocked today. Facebook was blocked about two weeks ago in case you are wondering why no updates to there. Blogspot has been permanently blocked for a few years. Anyway, have a look at the photo's if they got there.

I hope to head off to other parts of China this weekend, so hopefully I will be able to send some pictures as we go.

BTW, I listened to SOO3 on the 2GB  podcast. :-)  Also the cricket via BBC5. :-)

I have managed to get a few swims in at the Tsinghua Un

See you,
Sean

                                     MEDIA RELEASE
Tuesday 14 July 2009

Don't let the Games begin without you - registrations close 31 July!

Time is running out for people to register for the Sydney 2009 World
Masters Games.

There are fewer than three weeks to go before Games registrations close on
Friday 31 July. The Games will see 28 popular sports competitions contested
at 72 venues, including many Olympic sites, throughout greater Sydney from
10-18 October.

"I've signed up for the Games open-water swimming race and urge everyone to
grasp the opportunity that the Games provide to compete at a major
international multi-sport event," Wallabies legend and Games ambassador
Phil Kearns said.

Open to everyone rather than elite athletes, the Games are the world's
largest multi-sport event, attracting more than double the number of
competitors of the Olympics.

To enter the Games people only need to meet their sport's minimum age,
which ranges between 25 and 35 years. Swimming is one of two Games sports
open to people as young as 25, with most of the 28 sports open to people
aged 30 plus.

"It doesn't matter how old or how good you are, everyone's invited to take
part in what's the biggest event of its kind on the planet," Games Chair
Margy Osmond said. "Don't let the Games begin without you - register now
before it's too late!"

Games organisers are expecting 25,000 people to sign up for the Games.
Registrants include a shot-putting, hammer-throwing, discus-chucking
great-grandmother who will turn 100 in August and Olympians from each of
the past 17 summer events.

In addition to the support of many domestic and international sports icons,
including Lord Sebastian Coe, Liz Ellis AM and Murray Rose AM, the Games
enjoy the backing of the Australian and NSW governments, with both of them
contributing $8.5 million in cash towards the staging of the biggest
one-off event in Sydney this year.

With one third of Games registrants expected to travel from overseas,
particularly Canada, New Zealand and America, the Games are projected to
deliver an economic benefit of $48 million to NSW. Among the biggest
winners are likely to be western Sydney regions with Games venues, areas
that are off the beaten tourist track.

Fit, fun and forever young is the motto of the Games, with registrations
open until Friday 31 July at www.2009worldmasters.com.
