The power of G

Apropos our discussion at the FaithWorx Advent program on Sunday, I just received this message from a friend that I thought to share with you.

"...  Changing gears a bit, many of you have been telling me that you haven't heard from me in a while, and it's true. This is actually my 3rd edition to an update I've been working on and have finally come to the point of sending it out. There are many stories and things to share, but to be brief, these past few months has been a time where G has led me to a place where - one: I could let go of certain things and a relationship - two: I was simultaneously removed from things and relationships - three: I am being stripped down in heart and spirit - but four: embrace a deep passion.
       G is faithful.
Last Tues., a bro called and told me he was thinking of me. He wanted to know how he could pr for me. One of the three things I told him was, "my spirit is broke, my spirit is broken right now."
The next day, an elder couple I met with, who didn't know too much of the details of my situation started telling me about, "a broken spirit" and what J first said on the mount, "blessed are those who are poor in spirit". While the husband was talking inside that restaurant on the top floor, I was cracked to tears, "depleted" and "deleted" are descriptive of my state, yet feeling the immense love of G, and that He's in passionate pursuit of me. That's the good news. It's like you feel like a piece of poo, but G would call you "blessed".
This past Sunday, a good brother from the States sent me a message, actually, it's a rap song interlude, called, "Theology of Brokenness". One line in the less than 2 minute interlude says, "listen, if you want to walk in the implications of the Gpsl, you're going to have to be married to the understanding of the principle of brokenness." My heart nodded in agreement to that so deeply b/c I knew it to be true. ("Thanks for sending that to me friend.") Recently, I have been even more grateful for the foreign brothers and sisters who have been a great support to me. At the same time, it's also been mutually refreshing to one another as we journey on amidst the spiritual scars and iron bars.

-Decision Making, "Turning" & Moving Forward-

... I've decided to explore something that I believe has been planted into my heart years ago. I'll be looking into various Chrstn (Sem.) schools. I hope to find growing up through solid training in formal settings in tandem with a church where I would be able to commit myself and serve for a long while. There is a quiet assurance to begin taking serious steps of faith towards this new direction, though outward circumstances such as finances, the economy, scarce jobs, etc. may say otherwise.

-Closing Thoughts & Remember-

I ask for you pr's regarding this new direction I'm heading ... and for this city and country to be radically transformed by the life of JC through His Spirit living inside His people. My pr for you is that whether in cold, sunny, windy, rainy, dry or humid, good, bad, happy or sad conditions that you'll be able to experience a true "white Christmas" this season, where you can rest assured in heart and spirit that all your sins have been washed away, white as snow, once and for all by the precious blood of JC. Believe.
Thanks for standing with me. "

“A Rich Young Nation: the challenge of affluence and poverty in Australia." - Sunday 6pm

"Australia is a rich country in many ways. It has experienced spectacular economic growth and prosperity in recent years, and increasingly our international economic status has become a symbol of our national identity. Yet in Australia there are many who are wealthy but in their affluence 'lack one thing' and there are those who have been bypassed by the economic growth and prosperity and live in poverty."

FaithworX is holding an evening reflection on the 2008 Social Justice Statement: "A Rich Young Nation: the challenge of affluence and poverty in Australia." led by Brother Michael.

When: Sunday November 23rd. 6pm
Where: St John's Hall, Cordeaux Street Campbelltown

In China

Hi All -

Sorry for not posting any updates earlier on the China experience this trip. I also didn't bring my multi-card reader to post my pictures! So that will have to wait until I get back.

We have been a little pampered on this trip with top class hotels and too much food. We have also had a guide and driver all the way except for the train trips (but even then they saw us right up to the train door). In Beijing I got to go out on my own via the subway system and explore, while Peter was on the day tours. That was a bit more to my taste, I must concede. Eating a bit more simply, and with a lot less waste of food, as well.

We have been from Beijing to Datong, Tai Yuan, Ping Yao, Xian, Luo Luang. All very different places (but lots of Buddha's!). We have managed to get to Catholic Churches along the way, but tomorrow is looking to be a challenge for Sunday mass as the guide doesn't seem to know anyone who knows anyone Catholic. Plus, we are travelling between cities tomorrow too! I will do a bit of an internet search now to see if I can find the address.

Bye for the moment. Off to Zheng Zhou and the Shanghai this week.

Greg Donovan - Rest in Peace

Hi:

Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts over the past day.

Unfortunately, following the procedures at the RPA Hospital yesterday evening, Dad continued to deteriorate through the night and his other organs began to fail into the morning. Despite his fighting spirit, his heart was too badly damaged to pump sufficient blood through his body.

He passed away about an hour ago (about mid-day) after the priest administered Last Rights with all his children present. Dad will be sorely missed by all of us. Dad has gone to join his wife Zelda, our mother, who left us last year.

We expect that the funeral will be at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiama next week. I will let you know the details as soon as we find out.

Peace
Sean

Dad in Hospital

Hi:

Just to let you know some news, Dad was taken to Bankstown Hospital yesterday suffering a major heart attack. The doctors at Bankstown initially stabilised his condition, but he then deteriorated further and it was decided to move him to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney as Bankstown did not have the facilities required. The doctor was not confident that he would survive the transport.

He was flown by helicopter to RPA where the cardio surgeons managed to open one of the blocked arteries. The remaining arteries they were unable to do anything with. As at 11pm last night Dad was on life support in the intensive care unit at RPA. The doctors at that time were not sure whether the procedures had been successful or whether the heart muscle had been too badly damaged.

Today they will see whether the heart is able to perform without life support assistance. In the worst case we will know today, however even in the best case it may be some weeks before it is clear what the result may be.

I will let you know more as events unfold. Please keep us in your prayers.

Sean

Faith & Life Update - Catholic Diocese of Wollongong - July 08

Catholic Diocese of Wollongong - Faith & Life Update - July 2008

Dear friend in faith,

Upcoming News and Events
Our World Youth Day website is your primary source of news for what is happening in our region for World Youth Day. In particular, I encourage your attendance on our Living Justly Day (11 July) and at the Everything Aussie Day (12 July). Flyers for both events are attached.

Click here for a complete listing of both upcoming events and Bishop Peter's recent articles.

The current issue of our diocesan newsletter, Journey, may be found here.

Help required to welcome our international pilgrims
Help is still needed to ensure our international pilgrims are welcomed and looked after at our diocesan gatherings (Wollongong, Nowra, Varroville). Our need is particularly for Friday, 11 July (Welcoming, serving, group leading: Living Justly Day - day and evening) and Saturday, 12 July (Lifting/moving: 3.30pm 5.30pm; 8.30pm 10.30pm; Sunday morning). If you can help in any of the above areas, even for an hour, please contact Jane Edwards on 4253 0899 or jane.edwards@woll.catholic.org.au. Please share this call for help through your networks. Of course, whether or not you can help, I encourage you to participate and invite others. Both Friday and Saturday will be memorable days!

Youth News
As the World Youth Day excitement mounts, we might also be asking what will be happening for pilgrims and other inspired young people after the event? I attach a "pics and flicks" poster which you may wish to put up on a community notice board or give to a young person that you know. Other initiatives can be found in our current issue of Journey or on our new youth and young adult website.

Support is at hand Parish Services Team
Bishop Peter is keen that our parishes receive strong support. The demands on priests and parishioners is increasing as more people seek to share in their Baptismal mission. Our parish services team is available to assist parish initiatives and link you to parishes who may have been through similar initiatives or put you in touch with appropriate resources. When requested, we can offer formation in areas such as prayer groups, stewardship, sacramental preparation, pastoral planning, pastoral councils, liturgy, RCIA, youth groups, evangelisation approaches and adult faith teams. Our members include Eileen Brown sgs (liturgy), Christy Honeysett (youth), Daniel Hopper (WYD), Frances Van Leerdam (IT, Finance and Administration), Libbey Byrne rsc, Kim Mannix and myself.

Where to for you - post WYD?
There are some great initiatives happening post WYD, but what are your hopes and dreams? how have you been inspired and what may you be looking for on the road ahead? Please share your thoughts and we may be able assist and to connect you with others.
Network of Adult Faith Formation
A number of those receiving this email are associated with a network of adult faith formation. Network members and others interested in adult faith formation will be interested to know we are continuing negotiations with Brisbane Archdiocese to secure the use of the Beginning Theology for our diocese. This offers small groups an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of faith with a mentor over a number of sessions. I will keep you informed and would be delighted if you would like to be part of a pilot group.

Reconnect, Rewired and Pastoral Letter
You may have read or picked up the recent pastoral letter from the Australian Bishops. This is of particular to interest to us, as it seeks to address the question of how we share the Good News with others. I would be delighted to hear of your own insights and experiences in this area. World Youth Day is a terrific time to engage in conversations about our faith. If you are interested in running a Reconnect Program or something similar, we can also offer support.

Faith & Life Guide
World Youth Day offers a spotlight onto the Catholic world. Therefore, it is timely that our six-monthly Faith & Life guide has been produced. Available here. Features include:
       Mass times and parish and school contact details;
       monthly faith and life events which can be reproduced and enlarged for display on noticeboards;
a directory of diocesan agencies, works, councils, faith groups and services.

I suggest that local communities approach hotels, clubs and other businesses to ask if a copy can be placed on display. Visitors to these venues sometimes seek Mass times and other information. Of course, this is also a great opportunity to evangelise!
Hard copies available upon request. (Parishioners please check with your parish priest first to avoid duplication).

Please let us know what is happening in your local area
Our Parish Services Team is happy to support any local initiatives you may be planning or to connect you with others who may have explored a similar pathway. Remember that the diocesan website www.dow.org.au is another good resource and can be used to post details of upcoming events.

May Christ remain our inspiration and our way.

Peace

Trinity Meet

Hi All,

An important message from the Meet Director of TRINITY CARNIVAL

On the day of our carnival there will be a big wedding in the chapel and consequently the school has asked that we enter the school/swimming pool via  the Victoria Street entrance and they have asked that all the people coming to the carnival  park in the Victoria Street school car park.

The area around the chapel will be off bounds to all and we have arranged for the area around the am phi theater at the front of the main basketball court attached to the pool to be our coffee, tea and soup area.  There is plenty of room and seating .

Thanks for your support and look forward to seeing you all at Trinity.

FaithWorx - Sunday 6:30pm - The Need for Personal Hope

Join us as Ray Reid explores

The Need for Personal Hope

        When: Sunday, 22nd June 6:30pm-8pm

Where: St John the Evangelist Hall, Meeting Room

Cordeaux St, Campbelltown

This presentation, The Need for Personal Hope, is a reprise of the talk that Ray gave at the Catholic Adult Education Centre at Lidcombe in February 2008.

The talk is on hope from a psychological perspective (including spiritual aspects). Ray will look at our fundamental and intrinsic hopes for being happy and fulfilled, linking these hopes with our need to love and be loved. The talk also covers aspects of false hope and its origin.

About the Presenter:

Campbelltown parishioner Ray Reid is a counselor with qualifications in social work, psychology and philosophy. He has strong interest in theology and spirituality. He has worked in Centacare agencies for nearly 30 years. His thesis for his Master's degree in social work was on the psychology of hope, and his understanding of the importance of hope has underpinned all his counseling work.
