Bible Study - Acts - Sunday 6:30pm

Join Brother John this Sunday for

Bible Study
Acts of the Apostles (2)

Following Pentecost join us to learn more about what ACTS tells us about the early Church history and discuss how this is relevent to us today. At our last Bible Study we looked at the link between the Gospels (in particular Luke) and Acts. We looked at the troubling story at the start of Acts 5. This week will see a deeper explication on this section as well as further development of the following chapters.

Day/Time: Sunday 6:30pm
Where:     St John's Hall Meeting Room

Into Great Silence (G) 161 mins

Synopsis: The Grande Chartreuse, the mother house of the legendary Carthusian Order, is based in the French Alps. 'Into Great Silence' will be the first film ever about life inside the Grande Chartreuse. Silence. Repitition. Rhythm. The film is an austere, next to silent meditation on monastic life in a very pure form. No music except the chants in the monastery, no interviews, no commentaries, no extra material. Changing of time, seasons, and the ever repeated elements of the day, of the prayer. A film to become a monastery, rather than depict one. A film about awareness, absolute presence, and the life of men who devoted their lifetimes to god in the purest form.

Director:Philip Gröning

Cast:the Carthusian Order

Origin:Germany

Language:English / French / Latin

Subtitles:Yes

Distributor: Dendy Films

Sherry

Sherry is the one who make it all seem better now and

Sherry is the one you want to see.

And it seems that the day will never be as good

As when your Sherry takes your hand

On the fifth of the three.

Sherry is the one who makes your mind rest easy now and

Sherry is the one to set you free.

And you know that the world is watching as you say the words

And Sherry takes your hand

On the fifth of the three.

She is the only one,

The one and only one,

She is the only one you need.

Sherry is the one you spend your whole life loving now and

Sherry is the one you want to be.

And it's true 'cause you know that Sherry is your lifelong friend

As Sherry takes your hand

On the fifth of the three.

And it's true 'cause you know that Sherry is your lifelong friend

As Sherry takes your hand

On the fifth of the three.

Prayers at the Graveside

All make the sign of the cross.

The leader begins: Praise be to God our Father, who raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Blessed be God for ever.

All respond: Blessed by God for ever.

2 Corinthians 5:1 We know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.

A minute silence

Lord Jesus Christ,
by your own three days in the tomb,
you hallowed the graves of all who believe in you
and so made the grave a sign of hope
that promises resurrection
even as it claims our mortal bodies.

Grant that our mother, Zelda,
may sleep here in peace
until you awaken her to glory,
for you are the resurrection and the life.
Then she will see you face to face
and in your light will see light
and know the splendor of God,
for you live and reign for ever and ever.

R/. Amen

O God,
by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest,
send your holy angel to watch over this grave.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

Into your hands, O Lord,
we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters.
In this life you embraced them with your tender love;
deliver them now from every evil
and bid them enter eternal rest.

The old order has passed away:
welcome them then into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain,
but the fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit
for ever and ever.

R/. Amen.

All join in prayers at the Graveside

John Henry Newman

Lord, support us all the day long,
until the shadows lengthen,
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.

Then in your mercy,
grant us a safe lodging,
and a holy rest,
and peace at the last.

Psalm 103: 1-2, 11-18

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he put our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him,
For he knows how we are formed;
he remembers that we are dust.
Our days are like those of grass;
like a flower of the field he blooms;
The wind sweeps over him and he is gone,
and his place knows him no more.

But the kindness of the Lord is from eternity to eternity
toward those who fear him,
And is justice toward children's children
among those who keep his covenant
and remember to fulfill his precepts.

Then the leader invites the congregation to offer their prayers of intercession:

V/. ... Lord hear us.

R/. Lord hear our prayer.

Then the leader prays:

For these prayers, and others we hold silently in our hearts, we now

pray to the Father in the words our saviour gave us.
All then join hands for the Lord's Prayer.

Then the leader prays:

Lord God,
whose days are without end
and whose mercies beyond counting,
keep us mindful
that life is short and the hour of death unknown.
Let your Spirit guide our days on earth
in the ways of holiness and justice,
that we may serve you
in union with the whole Church,
sure in faith, strong in hope, perfected in love.
And when our earthly journey is ended,
lead us rejoicing into your kingdom,
where you live for ever and ever.

R/. Amen.

V/. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
R/. and let perpetual light shine upon them.

V/. May they rest in peace.
R/. Amen.

V/. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

R/. Amen.

All make the sign of the cross as the leader concludes:

May the peace of God,
which is beyond all understanding,
keep our hearts and minds
in the knowledge and love of God
and of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

R/. Amen.

New Jerusalem - (c) Sean Donovan 2000

© Sean Donovan 2000

New Jerusalem

In the city of a night

there's a rainbow

and it glitters

on a hazy street-life.

All the actors

on a rain-weathered street-stage

Make their entrance from a low-swept doorway.

Take me back

New Jerusalem.

Take me back

to the roots of them.

Shuffle aimlessly between the ends of day.

Lifeless Romeo

face down on the pavement.

Leaves that settle

on his dust-covered raincoat.

Cries of merry

from the darkness are sounding.

Pallid Fallstaff

leads the chorus downward.

Take me back

New Jerusalem.

Take me back

to the roots of them.

Shuffle aimlessly between the ends of day.

Mum's Funeral

Thank you all for your support and words of encouragement at this time of loss.

The funeral was held on Thursday at 11am and was a very moving service for all of the family. Afterwards, we sent mum off with a big traditional Irish wake, of which I am sure she would have been overjoyed.
I have put a copy of the video tribute that was played at the end of the service onto YouTube at the following link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhh0K9OyQKA

It will take a little while to load. I have also posted an embedded link on my web site at http://smpdonovan.blogspot.com/ .

FaithWorx - Eucharist + Bible Study - Sunday 6:30pm St Johns Hall Meeting Room

Last week we continued our discussion on the Sacraments. We looked at how and when confirmation fits into the other sacraments as well as seeing that we are "strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." (Catechism 1285)

We commenced our look at the Eucharist, the mystery of it being both the peak of our faith while at the same time being the most common practive. We posed the question "What is unique about being Catholic?".

You are invited to join us this week as we continue to uncover

The Eucharist

Where: St John's Hall meeting room
TIme: Sunday 6:30pm (following 5pm mass)

How do you explain our belief about the Eucharist to others? Come and share your thoughts and experiences.

Also this week will we look at the readings for Sunday:
 Fifth Sunday of Easter
  Acts 14:21-27
  Rev 21:1-5a
  Jn 13:31-33a, 34-35

You are welcome to join us for another interesting FaithWorx discussion and cuppa.
